Where did it come from?
Joseph Heller was an aerospace engineer who trained to be a Rolfer with Dr. Ida Rolf, the originator of structural integration. He became a Structural Patterner in the mid-70's, and trained with Dr. Brugh Joy, a noted physician and innovator in the field of preventative medicine.Heller began to synthesize a new form of bodywork and founded Hellerwork in 1978.
"Hellerwork assumes that we are responsible for our bodies; that we have a choice; that life can be better from now on. Anyone can experience him/herself as a full manifestation of spirit in the simple acts of daily life..."
excerpt from Joseph Heller's book on Hellerwork, Bodywise.
During the 10 session series, the structural balance of the body is realized through the systematic release of muscle and connective tissue using avariety of gentle deep-tissue bodywork techniques.
  • Sections one through three focus on the surface, or "superficial" layers of the body's connective tissue which are associated with those muscles that are near the surface of the body called the sleeve muscles.
  • Sections four through seven are the core sections. When we talk about the core, we mean the deaper musculature and connective tissue of the body.
  • Sections eight through ten are designed to integrate the core and sleeve. During these sections, the Practioner balances and aligns the unique patterns of each client's body.
  • Follow Up For the Hellerwork Series
When you complete the Hellerwork series your body is in a new state of alignment. It is much more balanced and much freer in movement. You are more aware of your body and able to determined its needs. Your body will continue to change for some time as a result of the Hellerwork series, perhaps for as long as a year. If you continue using the movement education lessons the changes will continue indefinitely. Your should talk with your Practitioner at the end of your Hellerwork series to determine your optimal followup program. We also recommend that you have a session after any kind of trauma, physical or emotional. In that session, your Practitioner can focus on rebalancing your entire body. (Remember that Hellerwork is not a treatment for your injury. Consult your physician for proper treatment.)
